Can digital games be an art form?   The answer is affirmative, according to the recent introduction of 14 classic and classy video games into the Modern Museum of Arts based in New York.  Just days ago an array of 14 well-known and well-played-by-the-world video games had been nominated to display in MoMA.  These 14 games include both old-school and new games played on arcades, home game consoles, and handhelds.   While qualifications for being nominated were not disclosed, it is reasonable to assume that these 14 games have succeeded in winning over hearts of gamers and also artists.

MoMA is planning to expand the video game exhibits to 40 game titles so anybody, including you, may have a say or an eye on which game deserves the honor for exhibition.  Below is a list of the 14 games nominated in chronological order.

Pac Man (1980)

Tetris (1984)

Another World (1991)

Myst (1993)

SimCity 2000 (1994)

Vib-Ribbon (1999)

The Sims (2000)

EVE Online (2003)

Dwarf Fortress (2003)

Katamari Damacy (2004)

flOw (2006)

Portal (2007)

Passage (2008)

Canabalt (2009)

How many of the above game titles have you played?  Perhaps in the near future when someone asks you what you are doing while gaming, the answer appropriate to the posed question would be, ” I am playing…an art.”
